How we came to start this site

I have my own software development company, but almost no customers at present. I too could have opted to join the queues of the unemployed, but I also decide that fighting back and trying to ride out the recession is a better option, both financially and psychologically.

As a software developer and web technologist, whose skills are being somewhat underused - except as in a voluntary capacity as an invited expert to the World Wide Web Consortium, it seemed sensible to lend some of my skills to get this site working. It servers two purposes.
  1. It allows me to help other people.
  2. It helps me to keep some of my skills up to date, for when employment opportunities arise.
On a personal level, I now also have a serious medical issue which reduces my capacity to work as I used to.

How we started

Postby Pete Tesseyman » Wed Mar 04, 2009 12:07 am

I've been in business as a handyman for around 25 years and things were going well until around 18 months ago when some of my contracts started to well, contract. Since then the credit crunch has made things increasingly difficult.

The choices are to give up and become one of the increasing number of unemployed or cut my personal spending and try to keep the business afloat until times get better, the second option is the way I'm going.

This means cutting back on inessential spending by reviewing where every penny goes. Surprisingly (well it was a surprise to me) although I never considered myself to be a spendthrift there are still lots of savings to be made.

The purpose of this site is to share them and to allow others to contribute their ideas, so if the crunch is affecting you tell us about it and how you are managing.
