Electricity & gas supplier: Good time to change

Postby Admin » Tue Sep 29, 2009 9:42 am

The price of energy remains very high in the UK, but many people are paying far more than they need to. :( Switching electricity and gas suppliers may save you hundreds of pounds per year. If you've never switched, it is very likely that you are paying too much and have been giving greedy gas and electricity companies too much money for years.
It is quite easy to find a cheaper supplier with a comparison web site and to get the switch over initiated and usually takes about 10 minutes.
  1. Have your most recent electricity and gas bills to hand
  2. Make sure you know your email address, as the comparison sites often need to get back to you by email
  3. Go to a comparison web site like CompareTheMarket.com
  4. Choose the option to compare utilities
  5. Fill in the required details. At a minimum, these will be:
    • Postcode or address
    • Current supplier, and probably tariff - which you should find on your bill
    • Current power usage, over the last year
    • Preferred means of payment - Monthly direct debit is normally the cheapest, but play around with the options
  6. Look at the list of results for your estimated savings
  7. Check any terms and conditions of potential suppliers
  8. Choose a new supplier and switch if it will save you money by following the links and instructions

Often internet only tariffs are the cheapest, and the same companies charge different rates in different locations. Some companies will guarantee prices for a set period and some utility companies have long minimum contracts (up to 2 years). The cheapest option is usually to have a dual fuel arrangement where you pay the same corporation for your electricity and gas.

Good luck, and if you do find somewhere to make a good saving, let us know.
